Boston Food Biz Incubator Notes “Freefall” for Small Business & Shares Pivot Plans; MASSACHUSETTS MAKER OF FIne Linens Now Making Sheets to Donate to Hospitals

Commonwealth Kitchen had to close its physical space last week but it is very much alive and fighting for its employees, member businesses, the food small business category and all of the champions working to feed people and make people safe in this crisis. In this extraordinary letter, Executive Director Jen Faigel details the experience of this unprecedented period and bold plans to keep supporting their employees and businesses in a variety of ways, and to pivot the physical kitchen space to support emergency food needs.

I cannot adequately summarize this letter. It is too powerful and will move you to want to help – and I hope you can and will. Please read and share with your teams – and find a course of supportive action.

Good News from the Good News Network

The Good News Network is an “an antidote to the barrage of negativity experienced in the mainstream media.” Managing Editor McKinley Corbley provides a round-up of good news stories in the COVID19 crisis that includes a CNBC report that there are now 20 potential vaccines in development; and a Charlotte Observer story that “Parkdale Mills Inc., one of the country’s largest yarn spinners, is working with companies like HanesbrandFruit of the Loom, and six others to build a manufacturing supply chain for the masks.”

Italian Innovation Company Issinova Has Adapted Snorkel Masks to Fit Ventilators

An Italian engineering innovation company Issinova has been using 3D printers to build desperately needed respirator parts that are keeping many coronavirus patients alive. In their words: A physician contacted them with an idea to “fix the possible shortage of hospital C-PAP masks for sub-intensive therapy.” The idea? “construction of an emergency ventilator mask, realized by adjusting a snorkeling mask already available on the market.”

Issonova cautions that the idea is “designed for healthcare facilities and wants to help in realization of an emergency mask in the case of a full-blown difficult situation, where is not possible to in find official healthcare supplies. Neither the mask nor the link are certified and their use is subject to a situation of mandatory need.” But this has been tested – on their own colleague who is in the hospital now. And it is working.

Hotel revenues are of course far off from expected levels due to the COVID19 crisis. Thanks Aarthi Swaminathan for this report.
